Mooresville commissioners approve a 12-month pause on new data centers

Commissioners approved the moratorium Monday night.

Mooresville is hitting pause on new data centers. Commissioners on Monday approved a 12-month moratorium, and WFAE, citing WJZY, says the vote was unanimous.

Officials said in a news release that many jurisdictions have recently adopted moratoriums and amended ordinances to regulate data centers. Town leaders say they want a balance between business growth and the potential environmental and electrical impacts, WFAE reports.

  • Concerns cited: electric capacity demand, water usage and noise
  • What's paused: consideration of new data center proposals
  • Staff job: assess zoning standards and make necessary updates

Mooresville isn't alone. WCNC reports the town joins other North Carolina communities pausing data center projects, and WJZY counts 56 other municipalities with moratoriums.
